Pantone releases their colours of the year every year basing it not solely on fashion trends. For only the second time in their 20 year history Pantone have chosen two colours for their colour of the year. Last year's colour had been chosen before the Covid-19 pandemic had begun.
Ultimate Grey and Illuminating were the two colours chosen for this year. Pantone's Colour of the Year often are seen as making a social statement, in 2019 Living Coral was a representation of the climate crisis. This year's colours represent the bad and the good that will come with the rest of this year. Ultimate Grey is a pale shade of dove which resembles pebbles on a beach. Their second choice Illuminating is a buttercup yellow, which Pantone describe as “bright and cheerful”; “sparkling with vivacity” and “imbued with solar power”. Pantone have not chosen a yellow colour in over ten years. The choice of the two colours sends a message of hope and is uplighting for everyone.
