Every year Pantone choose a new colour for the year ahead and for the year 2020 Pantone has chosen Classic Blue, a colour which has been described as the colour that one would see in the sky at dusk. Since the Pantone colour of the year began 20 years ago, Pantone has become influential in product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, industrial design as well as product packaging and graphic design. Interestingly, the start of each decade since its formation has been a shade of blue: in 2000 it was the colour Cerulean and in 2010 it was the colour Turquoise. People can engage more with the colour blue and all its various shades. Pantone have used this quote to describe the Classic Blue colour:

Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.” (Pantone, 2020)

Pantone has chosen the Classic Blue colour to start the new decade as the colour is representative of a new beginning. This classic colour is an excellent choice for what can be an uncertain, often disconnected era at the beginning of a new decade. It continues on from the previous colours, such as last year’s colour of the year Living Coral, in that it can be seen to have a more concentrated focus on sustainability than in selections previously. Pantone made a wise and impactful choice this year by focusing on prominent social issues to inspire which colour that they chose to feature as the colour of the year as the Classic Blue colour is both genderless and season less. Society is ever changing and this colour is an appropriate option to showcase this. Classic Blue is a colour that is accessible and desirable for people in all walks of life.

Pantone’s choice of Classic Blue is also symbolic of the past and that we are now returning to a more traditional way of decorating. Many large corporations have used this colour in their marketing campaigns as the Classic blue colour is seen as a symbol of trustworthiness, stability and confidence. Many financial institutions continue to use this colour to connect with their customers. Classic Blue is a colour that is also quiet closely associated with water. The colour can therefore be seen as a colour for cleansing, starting anew just as the world is as we enter into this new decade.

Pantone has also joined together with different brands to make the colour of the year a more sensual event. In previous years, one would just be able to see the colour in its single form but now they have used brands to tap into all the other senses. For touch they have developed a swatch of suede-like fabric in the chosen shade, for smell they have a musk and sea salt scented candle, for taste they have made a blue, berry-flavoured jelly and for hearing there is a 3 minute audio track titled “Vivid Nostalgia”.
